Fort De Soto — often written Fort DeSoto — is Pinellas County’s masterpiece — more than a thousand acres of barrier islands with lagoon-laced beaches, a century-old fort, and sight lines to the Sunshine Skyway. North Beach alone has been ranked among America’s best, and at golden hour it earns every word.

Best Photo Spots at Fort De Soto

A thousand acres means options — these four corners of the park cover lagoon, sunrise, history, and open bay.

North Beach at Fort De Soto Park

The park’s crown jewel — a lagoon-backed beach where herons stalk the shallows and the sand stretches wide and white at sunset.

East Beach

Facing the Skyway bridge across open water, East Beach owns the park’s sunrises — and stays quiet nearly all day.

Getting to Fort De Soto

  • About 40 minutes from Tampa via I-275 and the Pinellas Bayway through Tierra Verde
  • The Bayway tolls are small — bring a SunPass or change
  • Daily parking fee at the park entrance covers all five islands
  • North Beach has its own large lot beside the lagoons
  • Gates close in the evening — sunset sessions are timed to the park schedule

When is the best time for photos at Fort De Soto?

The last ninety minutes before sunset at North Beach, when the lagoons mirror the sky and the sand glows. Sunrise at East Beach with the Skyway behind you is a stunning alternative.

North Beach’s parking lot is the standard meeting point, with the fort or piers added by request. Exact directions and timing come before session day.

Just the per-vehicle parking fee and a little extra drive time down the Bayway. Amanda handles the location choices and timing around park hours.

Naturals and soft earth tones disappear beautifully into the dunes and lagoon light. A complete style guide is included with every session.

Storms cross the park fast, so we watch the radar together and keep plans flexible. If the evening washes out, your session moves to the next clear light.
