Sunrise vs. Sunset: Best Time for Tampa Photos

Sunrise or sunset? Both can paint your Tampa family photos in gorgeous light, but they feel completely different. To get that signature glow, I shoot exclusively during the Golden Hour at sunrise or sunset. Avoiding the harsh midday sun eliminates squinty eyes and heavy shadows, so everyone looks relaxed and radiant.

Sunrise is my favorite insider secret: the beach is completely empty, the air is cooler, and the water is usually at its calmest.

Sunset is the classic beach experience, featuring those iconic, painted coastal skies and a lively, well-rested crowd.

Golden hour — the 30–60 minutes just before sunset or right after sunrise — is hands down the best time for Tampa family photography. The light is soft and warm, it flatters every skin tone, the beaches around Tampa Bay are far less crowded, and the Gulf sky often turns pink and gold. I book sessions around these windows intentionally, so you always get the best possible light.

I recommend soft, coordinated neutrals — cream, sand, sage, dusty blue, dusty rose, and warm white. Choose fabrics that move naturally in the coastal breeze and avoid bright neons or large logos, which distract from the faces in your portraits. After booking, you’ll receive a personalized styling guide that takes the guesswork out of getting dressed.

Tampa is genuinely unlike anywhere else on the Gulf Coast. Sugar-white sand and crystal-clear Gulf Coast water create a backdrop that’s naturally warm, colorful, and timeless — no editing tricks needed. the Tampa Bay coast gives us access to a variety of stunning settings within a short drive: open Gulf-front shorelines, winding dune paths draped in sea oats, mangrove-lined shorelines, and quiet stretches of shore.

The honest answer is — it depends on your family’s vibe! A few favorites: Clearwater Beach & Indian Rocks Beach for classic Gulf-front scenery; Caladesi Island & the quiet tidal flats for a more private, lush feel; Fort De Soto Park for wilder, natural scenery with expansive dunes and sea oats; and Pass-a-Grille & St. Pete Beach for coastal elegance. I’ll recommend the best fit for your family’s style and the time of year — just ask!

I keep a close eye on the Tampa forecast in the days leading up to your session. Light clouds or overcast skies actually make for soft, flattering light. If rain is likely, I’ll reach out to reschedule for the next best available date so we don’t risk your images (or your family) getting soaked.

Ideally, a well-rested, well-fed, happy family! Since we know that doesn’t always happen as planned, feel free to bring along whatever helps everyone feel comfortable — pets, a favorite lovey, tutus, capes, or a small umbrella for shade before we start. I’ll help keep things light and fun so nerves melt away quickly.

For sessions between March and August, plus Thanksgiving and spring break weeks, I recommend booking 4–6 months in advance since those dates fill quickly. If you’re traveling to Tampa Bay and already have firm dates, reach out as soon as you book your accommodations so we can lock in your preferred sunrise or sunset window.

Absolutely — extended family beach photography is one of my favorite types of sessions! Single Family sessions include mom, dad, and kids, while Extended Family sessions can include the whole crew: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I regularly photograph multi-generational reunions along Tampa and love helping big groups feel relaxed in front of the camera.
