Worried your toddler will melt down the moment I lift the camera? You’re not alone – it’s the number-one concern parents share with me. The good news: with a little planning, you can prepare kids for a photo session so well that they think the whole evening was a beach playdate. Here’s what actually works.

Guard the Nap

Whatever it takes, protect nap time on session day. A rested kid is a cooperative kid. For sunset-light sessions that run close to bedtime, a late-afternoon car nap on the drive over works wonders.

Feed Them First (and Bring Backup)

Dinner before the session, plus a stash of non-staining, non-messy snacks for the beach – think puffs and crackers, not chocolate or anything red. Save the big treat as a finale, not a mid-session bribe on their lips.

Talk It Up – the Right Way

Skip “you have to behave for pictures.” Instead: “We’re going to the beach to play with Miss Amanda – we might splash, look for sand dollars, and Mom and Dad will come too!” Low pressure, high fun. Kids who expect play give real smiles; kids who expect a performance give the cheese grin.

Let the Beach Do Its Thing

Some of the best images in every gallery are the in-between moments – running from waves, dumping sand out of a bucket, being swung between parents. I build play into every session on purpose. If your child needs ten minutes to just be a kid mid-session, that’s not a delay; that’s the plan.

Parents: Relax on Purpose

Kids mirror your energy. If you’re calm and playful, they will be too – and yes, that includes the grumpy dads. I promise it’s painless, and there’s usually a moment where dad ends up having the most fun.

What I Handle

Posing, wrangling, silly noises, sand-dollar hunts, and knowing when to push on and when to take a break – that’s my job, not yours. After hundreds of family sessions I’ve never met a kid we couldn’t win over by sunset.
