Your engagement photos will likely be on your walls (and your wedding website) for decades – so what should you wear? Here’s exactly what I tell my couples about what to wear for engagement photos, whether we’re shooting barefoot on the Gulf or downtown on the Tampa Riverwalk.
Plan Two Outfits
Most of my engagement sessions include an outfit change: one relaxed, one dressed up. A casual look feels like your everyday love story; a flowy maxi dress or cocktail look adds that editorial wow. The change takes five minutes and doubles the variety in your gallery.
For Her: Movement Is Everything
If you take one tip from this page: wear something that moves. A long, flowy dress catches the Gulf breeze, flatters every body type, and turns a simple walking shot into something cinematic. Soft solids – cream, sage, blush, terracotta, slate blue – photograph best against sand and sunset.
For Him: Simple and Sharp
Fitted chinos or trousers with a linen button-down is the beach formula; swap in a blazer for city sessions. Coordinate with her palette without matching exactly, and skip loud patterns and logo tees.
Beach Session Notes
Go barefoot or in simple sandals, leave the stiff denim at home, and embrace the wind – it’s your free wardrobe stylist. If you’re headed to one of the romantic locations around Tampa like Pass-a-Grille or Fort De Soto, bring a light layer for after sunset.
City Session Notes
Downtown and Ybor call for a slightly elevated look – structured fabrics, heels if you want them, richer tones. The brick and neon do a lot of work, so keep outfits clean and let the location provide the texture.
The Details
Get a manicure (ring close-ups are guaranteed), bring touch-up lip color and a brush, and practice walking in anything new. Most importantly: wear what feels like you on your best day, not a costume.
