You booked the session, you picked the beach – now comes the question every mom asks me first: what should we wear for family beach photos? After years of Tampa Bay sessions, here’s my honest, field-tested guide to outfits that photograph beautifully in sunset-light light.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
The all-white-shirts-and-khakis era is behind us. Instead, pick a palette of three or four soft colors and let each family member wear their own combination. Think sage, cream, dusty blue, blush, taupe, and soft rust – colors that harmonize with sand, sea oats, and sunset.
Colors That Love Sunset light
Warm, muted tones glow in the last hour of sunlight; neons and bright primary colors bounce color onto faces and pull the eye away from expressions. Skip big logos and busy graphics – they date the photos fast. If you want one pattern, keep it small and soft (a floral dress works wonderfully) and keep everyone else solid.
Fabrics That Move
The Gulf breeze is part of the magic. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and lightweight layers catch the wind and add movement to every frame. Stiff, clingy, or heavy fabrics fight the beach instead of dancing with it.
Start With Mom
My best tip: choose mom’s outfit first – the one she feels amazing in – then build everyone else’s around it. When mom feels confident, the whole gallery shows it.
Kids: Comfort Wins
A fancy outfit that itches will show up on a toddler’s face in every photo. Choose soft pieces they can run, dig, and be twirled in. Bring a backup outfit in the car, and plan on everyone being barefoot – it looks better and nobody loses a shoe to the tide.
The Quick Don’t List
Avoid brand-new spray tans, matching t-shirts, transition lenses, and anything you’d have to keep adjusting. Do bring a brush, touch-up lip color, and snacks that don’t stain.
